A cam, dog or moving carriage rides onto the cross roller, pushes the plunger in, and the contacts change over. When the part moves away, the plunger returns and the contacts reset.

The cross roller sits crosswise on a horizontal plunger, so it suits cams and dogs that travel across the face of the switch rather than straight into it. The roller rolls under the moving part instead of dragging against it, which cuts wear on both the switch and the cam and keeps the switching point consistent over long runs.
